It’s Official!

Just an FYI: As of yesterday, I have resigned from my position with New Track Media and am no longer connected with Quilter’s Home magazine in any way. I am also discontinuing any involvement with Quilt Out Loud,  QNNtv.com, and Quilter’s Club of America.

Never fear: More is in the works and bigger and better things will be happening for me (and us) so keep checking out my blog and web site for updates on where you can find my next patterns, projects, fabrics, videos, shows, articles, lectures, classes, and books (and, who knows, maybe even bigger surprises!)

Quilt on, cupcakes, and do what you love!

xoxom (maybe I can actually hang out here a little more!)

Ye gods and little fishes! My subscription to QH has one year to run and I’ll bet that the new ed will turn your magazine into the sameoldsameold and I will sadly watch the bright light of QH fizzle out. No one else has your cockeyed view of the Q world (bless your pickley heart).

I’m all eyes to see what new adventure your king-sized contemporary merry-go-round takes you on. Best wishes dear heart.

How can I opt out now – I need to know. Both from the magazine and from the show!!!!! I don’t want to be a part of them if you aren’t.

I don’t know what is happening but it has to be something very important (either in a good way or not) for you to have done this so quickly. Good luck in whatever it is Mark.

It will be interesting to see what face, if any, is on the next issue of Quilter’s Home, that’s fer shure. I know that the former editor of Quilters Newsletter, Jan Magee, is going to be the new editor-in-chief of Quilter’s Home so maybe she will appear on the cover of the magazine with her cat …. or parakeet ….. or horse. Sigh.

    Hi Mark!
Please don’t resign your positions with Quilter’s Home Magazine and Quilt Out Loud! I subscribed to them because of YOU! I love you! You are refreshing, bright and fun! I love what you do for quilting! I can’t put the magazine down when I get it in the post and I re-read it a number of times. As far as Quilt Out Loud goes, you make the show vibrant! After watching 3 episodes I wanted more of them and at quicker intervals. Jodi is sweet and talented but I watched because of you. Your Ideas are cutting edge and very interesting! Please, Please come back to both ventures!
If you don’t I will probably drop my viewership for lack of interest!
I hope you are alright and that you family is fine! I only hope for the best for you! You are in my thoughts and prayers!
Warmest regards and I extend my friendship to you a fellow quilter…

This is quite the shockeroo. I plan to cancel my subscripion to Quilt Out Loud tomorrow since I had to MAKE time to wach you – but I WANTED to make that time. Now? Who knows.

I MAY give the mag a one issue chance, but I’m sad that I just renewed…I may have to cancel that as well.

I realize this must be BIG for you ….hope it all works out.

    Thanks for the laughs.

BTW – I met you once at Quilt Connection in Berkeley Heights, NJ. You had just purchased your chickens and we learned all about them! I ran into Sally at that Philly show as well (at Liza’s booth of course)…how I MISS that shop!

Mark, best of luck in everything you do. Van’t wait to see what that will be. I will miss your imprint on QH. As a 56 (okay almost 57) anal banker/quilter, I have loved the magazine since I first subscribed to it. You made it unique and edgy. As everyone has said, it wasn’t your garden variety magazine. I giggled and guffawed my way through every issue.

I hope to someday attend one of your classes or lectures. I know you are a hoot.

You know people are cancelling their subscriptions in droves, and that’s just the ones who are up-to-date on the computer. Wonder what genius thought this was a good move for the publishing company? Mark will be able to do whatever he wants to do, his personality and talent will always draw the crowd. Meanwhile the publisher has what as their backup plan?! I mean, NOBODY follows Mark – he’s the headliner of the show!

    WTF!!!!!??????
GH is the only quilt mag I read cover to cover! BECAUSE OF YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS!!!! I had been trying to get a card out of one of the mags to subscribe for months, but every time I found a QH – the cards were gone! All the shops in our area (WA State where Left Wing/Tree Huggin’/Liberals – you say that like there is something wrong with it – reigns!) sold out of QH the day it came in the door!!!! A lady in one shop says people come in and go through QH and take the cards. Quilters steel? I can’t believe it!
I don’t subscribe to QNN because my income is limited and have always felt cheated because I couldn’t watch your show. Will there be a couple more issues with your articles in QH or it this it? “xcuse me………I gotta go in the powder room and bawl………Wwwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh!

  73. September 25, 2009 at 2:20 pm

I am so sorry to hear this! I buy Quilters Home Mag because of Mark’s mark! I love his sense of humor, and the twists that his writing style brings to some of the most mundane of quilting articles.

I look forward to seeing what the future brings for Mark!

Mark Sweetie— there’s always a room for you and yours on the Prairie Farm here in the wilds of Nebraska if you need to “get away.” (Remember the birthing cow on my old blog and all of the Nebraska Pickles?)

Just another quilter to realize the almighty buck is what prompts these companies to make changes. Mark you will survive and probably better off for the change. Quilterstalk.com crashed and then after that they went to the dogs. People loose faith in the quilters that work so hard to keep things going and it really isn’t their fault. The publishers and media groups think their policies are best, but who looses out, The consumer. QNN was to replace the Quilterstalk.com and I think it falls flat. Trying to keep a positive vibe going about this, and thrilled if it is a good move for the Big Pickle…but dang it on the timing! I just re-subscribed last weekend for TWO YEARS. Argh. I suppose I will try to wait and see how the magazine fares.

    Mark,

I do not quilt, but love quilts – love to read about them. Your magazine was one of the magazines I made sure to get every month. I would jot down on my calendar when the next issue would come out and then be over at B & N to get it on that day! I know it is better to subscribe, but I found it a treat for me to just go and buy it off the stands – treat myself to a Starbucks – and then go home – settle on my couch – and smile and giggle my way through the magazine. I will miss you and hope you come out with a new magazine soon! Say hello to Violet, Petunia, and Tulip for me!

Oh, say it isn’t so! This is a sad say in the quilting world. I just subscribed to Quilter’s Home for 1 year! I would never have subscribed if I’d known this first!! Mark, you are the ONLY reason I would even read that magazine or watch “Quilt Out Loud” – guess I’ll cancel my subscription to the mag and not renew the F&P for next year! Save myself some $$$$ – I just watched the latest episode without you – it sucked!!

Hugs and you know we’re on your side hon. It will not be the same with out you. You helped open up the quilting world to a bigger funner hipper audience. Thank you Mark.

I sure hope we find out what the heck happened! I don’t know which is more disappointing…the magazine or Quilt Out Loud. I think the magazine…I subscribe to more than 10 quilt magazines and yours is my absolute favorite…and the only one that I read from cover to cover. The magazine is the hardest to understand….I mean, it’s YOUR magazine! There will be no Quilter’s Home without you. I can’t help but wonder if the last issue I received was the very last…I sure hope there is one more on the way. ALSO, it would be kinda neat if you decided to keep up on your blog now…I’ve been disappointed there hasn’t been much posted. I can’t wait to see what you’ve got up your sleeve because knowing you, it’s gotta be GREAT! Thanks for all of the wonderful things you brought into my life through Quilter’s Home and Quilt Out Loud.

I live near Amish country in Ohio and am familiar with the Amish practice of “shunning” when a member has been cast out of their community. That is what I thought of when I received the emailed “newsletter” from qnn.tv.com in my inbox today. LOL

I *know* that Mark is going to be on the episodes up through February (Natalie from Quilt Out Loud told me so in an email) so it is somewhat pathetic that the folks promoting the show do not mention him in the advertising for those episodes.

    • September 27, 2009 at 6:17 pm

No kidding, Tina; I agree wholeheartedly! I sure wish I’d win the lottery (since I’m not independantly wealthy) so I could make sure Mark could have his own magazine without any need for advertisers or those corporate types…no guidelines whatsoever! And all subscription money, plus a hefty salary and every perk imaginable going to Mark. In fact, maybe even have subscriptions cost a few bucks a year; just enough to cover postage! That way everyone who wanted to subcribe could! And just imagine, freedom of the press to the max, Lipinski style!!! I love to dream BIG!

You certainly made it fun and were a breath of fresh air! I will miss your lighthearted approach to quilting and life in general…but as has been said, “when God closes a door, he always opens a window…just don’t hang out in the hall so long that you miss the window”! I am just SICK about this! I have never enjoyed such deliciously irreverant humor from a magazine in my life… would have paid double for it! Who cared about the patterns.. brand X has them in all the other dry, predictible how-to quilt mags. I love QH for Mark’s articles, tips, visits to other quilters homes, his funny asides and remarks, photos, recipes for snacks & drinks, Tulip, Mark’s shining countenance, etc etc. I read every word of it and laughed until tears ran down my face so many times. I SO looked forward to each issue’s arrival in the mail.. practically camped out at the box when it was due! Life will be soooo bland without you, Mark. You are simply THE BEST! I know “they” will be unable to create the mag without you, so will be cancelling my subscription. You ARE QH! Accept No Substitutes…lol! Love ya, keep us informed of what next!! XOXOXOK

There are plenty of quilting magazines with patterns and instructions, but there was only one that appealed to those of us who a a bit irreverent and enjoy some humor. Thanks and please don’t go away – we’ll follow you wherever.

This is the rumor that I heard:
“The company that published Mark’s quilters home was bought by new track media- They came in and fired alot of the old executives and started changing editors and such. This company controls a lot of quilting and crafting magazines including Fons and Porter, QNNTv, McCalls and many others. I think the magazine will continue but without Mark’s name- He owns his name- he also quit his show quilt out loud on qnntv-Mark hasn’t really said what happened but when companies are bought up there are usually alot of big changes. It’s too bad because I really enjoyed his magazine.”

Wow! What a shake-up. We think the magazine is going to be a little lighter on subscribers and ditto with QOL.

Well, we know your decision was for the best! Good things will come from this. We know whatever you have up your sleeve will rock the quilting world when it launches… Controversy is good!

BTW, we are also DYING for those answers to those all important questions:
    - What kind of wine or beverage is appropriate for constructing different types of quilts? AND should a different beverage be consumed for the cutting, piecing and quilting stage or should we stay consistent?
    - If we use invisible thread will our quilting disappear instantly or does it take some time?

<> As soon as you announce your new venture we will all put on our tea shirts and hoist some pear wine in celebration

Well… have been doing a bit of “super-sluthing’ and now see what has happened. My gut tells me that Mark told CK’s new owner, New Track Media, “to stick it where the sun don’t shine” after they totally cleaned house at CK and sent a lot of his friends unceremoniously packing. I doubt seriously that New Track asked, nor expected Mark to tell them to kiss off.. they were pretty proud of his affiliation with THEIR company. So… Mark… I hope my assessment is correct and you gave them what-for as you slammed the door on their plans for you and your mag. Love it if that’s what happened. Man Oh Man ! I am such a procrastinator normally – but we were leaving on a trip and I was afraid I’d miss renewing my subscription to QH. I just couldn’t stand the thought of missing even one magazine. We just got back and I happened to read in QN (a gift subscription from a friend) that Jan Magee was going to be the new EIC for QH. I paniced and put out the word on our ND quilters chat group for any info available. Then I heard you wouldn’t even be continuing on with QOL. I’ve been a member of QNNtv since they went subscription. I’d considered dropping it because I never took the time to watch it. Then QOL came along so I decided what the hey. I guess I’ll renew when it comes due. Which should be any day now. Good thing I got the heads up on this! I could just see you sword it hand, cute little green tights, cape flying, sword flashing defending all we in the quilt world hold dear. I wish you could have slayed the dragon! Please retreat to the castle and brew something up to restore our spirits!
Looking forward to exciting fairy tales and gallent adventures !

Just watched the most recent episode of QOL where you visited Meg Cox’s home. She is one very classy lady, you had an excellent visit and yet I’m very sad to know that these episodes of QOL will not be going on and on and on … sigh.

Hi Mark. Just want to tell you I am one of your many fans. I subscribe to the magazine, which I thought was a bit toned down this current issue. Also subscribe to Quilt Out Loud because of YOU ! I wish you and your family all the best. We need your voice in the quilting world, Mark. Please don’t leave us for long……I plan to be a lifelong member of the Mark Lipinski fan club (now doesn’t that make your day ! smile). I have tears in my eyes, Mark. I’m going to miss you so….

Had just renewed my subscription for two years, because of YOU. Have just cancelled renewal (and told them why!)

You are too creative, positive, fun, inspiring, talented, and unique to be burdened by anyone who doesn’t appreciate your wonderfulness.

Whatever is in store for you next, I’m behind you 100%.

Thank you for giving me permission to be less than perfect, and to have fun being myself. You are loved. XOXO

I’m canceling my brand new subscription as well. It was the only quilting mag I read because, Mark, dog gone it…you are hilarious!!! I’m a new sewer and I go to Market every year with Indygo Junction as I work for them and you gave me a big hug last time and I LOVED IT!!!! You made that magazine to me. I can’t wait to see what you are going to do next. Are you coming to Houston? If so, come by the booth. We have to know where you are going next…so we can follow like the quilting sheep we are!!! Love you and glad you are following where your heart leads to…just hope it doesn’t lead to far from us!!!

Sorry to hear that you are no longer with the magazine. I loved that magazine but I can’t imagine it without you at the helm. It won’t be the same. Too bad I have one year left. But I’m sure that you will bounce back in to something bigger and better. You’d better or else who is going to ridicule all the quiltzillas? Good luck in all your future endeavours and I sure it’s going to be great! Keep us posted. Thanks for the laughs.

Dear Mark, I have been enjoying Quilt Out Loud. I think you were the “Out Loud” part of the team which made it so fun. They’re gonna have to give the show a different name now. You will be missed. And for the record (to anyone of the higher ups in the quilt media world) I am a rather conservative person and still enjoyed Mark’s antics and his take on quilting. Lighten up, folks! Mark, wishing you the best.

Mark – OMG I am so in shock and so saddened with this news I just learned on our quilting board “Quilts Your Way”. I absolutely LOVE your magazine and just renewed. I plan on cancelling it immediately. I love your take on things, have read and saved every issue and just can’t believe that you won’t be coming to visit me via the USPS. Very sad face!

I have cut back on magazines but have kept my favorite three and you were #1 on the list. Please keep us posted as to what you are up to and how things are going for you. I have put your blog into my favorites for easy access. God Bless You, Mark. You have been a bright ray of sunshine in the quilting world. Don’t let that flame go out, you hear?

Mark, When I read about this I wanted to cry! I just suscribed to the magazine and had to go around and around to get my first issue.I only subscribed because of you. I’ll wait to see what happens now but I may cancel now. I hope what’s happening with you is all for the best and I hope your quirky sense of humor will grace all of the quilting world in another venue soon!!! You sure have lots of fans…

    Mark,
OMG. Like many, many others, I too subscribed to Quilter’s Home and Quilt Out Loud, all because of you! I guess you could say, found money?!? I’ll check out Aurifil and see if they would like it.
Above all else, take time for yourself and your family. Get grounded, and come out in all your glory. I’ll be there!
You’re my inspiration and the sun on my dark cloudy days. I always look at things and say WWMD? and laugh my a@@ off.
    Cheers,

    Dear Mark,

I have been off-line for sometime and was studiously deleting the older postings on the Posse when I read something about you not being with Quilter’s Home anymore. What a shock! I immediately went to your website to discover to my dismay that it’s true. How sad, but I know you will persevere and do bigger and better things and all your fans will be out their supporting you!

For the record, I’ve canceled my QH subscription (had just renewed through 2011) and will also be canceling my QNN and Fons and Porter subscriptions. Methinks they couldn’t stand the competition from a fresh, new informative look at quilting.

Best wishes and if you are ever in the Kerrville/San Antonio area, we have a lovely private apartment in our new house for guests such as yourself!

Will you be at the Houston International Quilt Show — I believe I read something about being there on the 19th? I will be at the show from the 14th but may have to leave the morning of the 19th.

Best wishes to you and yours and we will be rooting for you…will check your blog often!

I am devastated! But that’s my selfish half. The other half knows that whatever contributed to this decision, Mark, you have done what you feel is best for you. I will miss your wonderfully wacky and irreverent presence (not to mention the recipes) and can only hope that the new editors, etc. of the mag don’t turn it into just another clone of all the others. BORING!!!
    Best of luck to you.

    Mark,
I just heard this Saturday at the Tucson Rusty Barn show. I’m glad I heard it before I mailed my order for Quilters Home Magazine, I had it in the car to mail when I left the show. You have to do something similar to Quilt Out Loud, you were perfect for it and your magazine won’t be the same.
Best of luck with your new ventured and stay within the public’s sight!

Hope you are looking forward to your next adventure as much as everyone else who commented here seems to be, myself included. You’re a breath of fresh air. And have fun in Houston!

    Hi Mark,

First, I’d like to offer my congrats and encouragement on your next project. Can you give us a hint? What ever it is I’m buying, watching, reading, attending it.

Now that that is out of the way, I want to whine along with everyone else. I too just renewed QH–the only mag I subscribe to because the others are so hum-drum. I missed your class at MQX. I’m still miffed at that darn ovarian cyst that burst just hours before class! Meeting you is on my bucket list of things to do before I die. Can you squeeze me in sometime in the next 40 years?

Bummer! Really liked “YOUR” magazine. It will be nothing without you gracing its cover and filling the pages within with hilariously written articles that made you laugh til your husband asked, “what are you laughing at?” I never got around to subscribing, but would pick up each issue at my BOM… Didn’t ever get to see you on QOL, but I am sure you will be missed and the show will never be the same!

Best wishes on your future endeavors…

Sigh…. it’s been a month since we heard anything from you, Mark… I’ve finished my latest quilt project, all the while wondering what’s going on “behind the scenes”. I check the blog every day, and… nothing. The silence is deafening from the guy who is usually so, shall we say, vocal? Loud? Bigger than life? Present! lol. Waiting… impatiently… for a note to let us know you’re ok and what’s happening with you, fella! :)

Sooooo very glad to hear you will be coming back bigger, better, stronger and just as damn funny!! Mark, you truly are an inspiration and I can’t wait to see what you have in store for us!! I was at PCIQ and a booth was selling magazines on a ’special’ deal. 8 or 10 ladies listening to the spiel and waiting to grab bargins when my big mouth said loudly “But Mark isn’t there anymore”. (The mag had his mug on the cover). At that several contenders turned, asked for a repeat and then announced they weren’t subscribing to that magazine for sure and walked away muttering. The booth attendee gave me his best “Shut the heck up, you’re driving away customers look:-) I won’t be re-upping either.

I’m late to the party here and didn’t realize you were gone until just yesterday when I got my new “no Mark and Tulip on the cover” issue. I’m verklempt! Mark, you’re why I subscribed and I’m so cheesed! Definitely NOT renewing and will tell everyone in my quilt guild. Mark, you’re displaying great style and integrity by not giving us all the gory details and trashing the corporate idiots who’ve destroyed your ‘zine, even though I really want the dirt. Pardon me for being snarky and wanting to hear that subscriptions have crashed. I hope there’s a new publication in your near future!!

I should have known something was up when I bought the latest issue of the magazine and your smiling face wasn’t beaming out at me – and then the ads in other quilt magazines for Quilt Out Loud and no mention of our Mark – darn!!!! I contacted QNNTv and told them bluntly that I had signed on specifically to watch Mark, and if he wasn’t going to be on the show then I wasn’t watching and I wouldn’t be renewing. I feel the same way about the magazine – until you came along who had ever heard of reading a quilt magazine from cover to cover and laughing yourself stupid the entire time. Hope you and yours are fine. Hurry back to us – we need the laughter in our lives. Love ya, dude!!
