Behind every stitch there is a story  . . .

Stitched! The Film

Stitched is a fun-filled documentary following three quilters racing to complete their entries for the International Quilt Festival, the largest quilt show in the nation. The Houston show draws more than 50,000 quilters including three artists who created some controversy with their work. Quilting legend Caryl Bryer Fallert was the first to win a major prize for her quilt made with a sewing machine. She mentored Hollis Chatelain who caused a stir when she won an award for a painted quilt. And Hollis mentored Randall Cook who sparked controversy with his quilt of a male nude. In this 72-minute documentary, these quilters create their pieces to compete in the 2010 quilt show.

Throw a Pot!

Sewing Pottery by Machine!

Meet designer, potter and author

Barbara Warholic

About Barbara . . .

I’ve enjoyed trying many arts and crafts over the years, but I always seem to come back to sewing.  I learned to sew at an early age and I found it was a great way to express myself creatively.

After I moved to North Carolina, I discovered the art of pottery.  I was really drawn to it because I loved the thought that something was made from clay from the earth, formed, then fired!  I took several classes from nationally recognized potters.  But with no room for a kiln or studio, I put pottery on hold.

In a book, I found a sewing technique called coiled cording. It looked quite interesting so I gave it a try.  Almost immediately it occurred to me how similar this sewing method was to making pottery; coiling cording (coiling is a pottery building technique) and sewing it to make a form.

This is how SOFT POTTERY came to be;  blending my two loves, pottery and sewing.

Meet the Author

All the way from Tuscany, Italy!

Pamela Sheldon Johns

Here’s a little about Pamela:

After earning a Master’s Degree in Education/Administration, Pamela taught cooking and food service to students with disabilities for ten years. She took a leave of absence in 1986 to pursue a love for cooking which began with employment with one of L.A.’s finest chefs, Joachim Splichal. Over the last twenty years she has enjoyed a freelance career that has included teaching, food styling, cooking school administration, and food writing.

In 1992, Pamela and her husband, Courtney Johns, moved to Santa Barbara where she started the Cooking School at Jordano’s Marketplace. At this same time, she also began working as the representative of an Italian culinary program, and her first cookbook, Healthy Gourmet (Collins, 1994), was published and nominated for a James Beard Cookbook Award. In 1996, Pamela decided to devote herself to developing the culinary workshops in Italy and spend more time writing about food. She is now the author of fourteen cookbooks and lives in Italy, overseeing week-long culinary programs and exploring the backroads of Italian food culture.

Pamela’s wine and food workshops are in several regions of Italy: TuscanyEmilia-RomagnaCampania, and Piemonte. A regular visitor to Italy since 1983, she and her family decided to make Tuscany their permanent home in 2001. Pamela, her husband Courtney, and their daughter Alaia now live at Poggio Etrusco, a 15-acre farm near Montepulciano, 1-1/2 hours south of Florence. Their villa is divided into private apartments for the students in the culinary programs and for weeklong holiday rentals. The estate is an active oliveto with 1,250 olive trees and a garden that provides fresh, seasonal produce.

Pamela returns to the states twice a year to teach cooking classes. Add your name to her mailing list, and she will notify you of upcoming events.

Here’s a little about Allie:

I was a quilter for years, making bed and wall quilts, using the techniques of traditional piecing, Broderie Perse, stained glass, and landscape collage…then I discovered crazy quilting and have been hard at that, with its attendant forays into beading and embroidering, for ten years now. The latest addition to my fiber world is an embellisher (machine felter).
