Mark on Maintaining a Creative Sense of Humor!

There is something about the “artist” in us that is soooo damned serious!

  • When we start sewing we put on that serious faceWe mean business!
  • When we paint or collage our teeth are clenched and we hold our brushes like it’s the last one we’ll ever own.  We’re not fooling around!
  • When we sketch, draw or plan our tongue darts in, out and around like we coated our lips with crumbs from the Keebler elves! We’re going to do this right, darn it!
  • When we knit, crochet, embroider, tat, or hook we ultimately find our shoulders pressed up against our ears!  We are not kidding!

One of the greatest gifts we possess, other than our extreme talent, of course, is a sense of humor (Oh, you might not have seen it in awhile but it’s in there, inside of you, somewhere)!

I get that you take your creativity very seriously, as you should.  I am only asking that you be mindful, that as your plans for creative achievement leaves your imagination and works through your hands, that your art and your experiences is your process and never result.

So, ease up.  Giggle. Celebrate your disasters as you would your masterpieces.  Humor and laughter in your work is as important as your skill, technique and dreams.  Taking your creative reputation and work with a grain of salt and a wink is key to your creative growth (and it doesn’t do your personal life any harm either).

Things going right? Celebrate!

Things going terribly wrong?  Laugh! (It’s not the end of the world. . .)

Know that you have the power to change the course of your struggling creativity with a snicker and a hoot.  Play with your creative muse and chuckle at your creative blunders, then allow the creative rewards to rain all around you!

Mark-your philosophy ties in so closely with my own beliefs. I am really enjoying this series on creativity. At first I couldn’t believe it was your writing, without the tongue-in-cheek sarcasm, but as it has gone on, it’s become a good contemplative springpoint for me. Thank you for sharing this with all of us.

Sorry, Big Pickle, but when I went to Yahoo Groups I could not find PickleRoadStudio as a group for me to join. I already belong to two Yahoo groups so I am familiar with joining and I would like to become an official Pickle.
