LOOSEN UP Then Experience Your Authentic Creativity Unfold!

Sometimes when I work on my art, not planning it, but literally working with my tools, supplies and techniques, I get so focused on perfection that my work — be it drawing, designing fabric or patterns, knitting, crochet, painting, quilting, hooking strips of wool, or whatever, — that  I find myself holding my pencil and pens and tools tighter and tighter and my art, my process, and my end result becomes more inflexible, severe and, well, tight.  It doesn’t work on so many levels . . .

LOOSEN UP, CUPCAKE!  Shake the stress and strain and perfection from your bod and allow your art to flow through you!

Think about when you were in grammar school, learning the Palmer Method for cursive handwriting (yes, there are profound creative lessons in even learning simple penmanship!).    The giant  continuous circles and ovals and the push-and-pull strokes that you were assigned were designed to loosen your wrist and arm so that the  casual and open handwriting dreams in your mind would merge with your relaxed wrist and hand to create your letter “art.”

When you find that your focus is counter-productive to your process, that your intensity is getting in the way of your creativity, and that  the development and progression of your art becomes stiff, monotonous, a bit tedious and uninteresting —take a break.  Go back to the basics you learned in second grade!

Draw giant circles and ovals and push-and-pull with colored crayons on giant newsprint pads (there is no right or wrong!).  Then, stop in your tracks. Step away from your work and do something else – swing your arms, clean the birdcage, weed the planter, take a walk.  When you come back to your work later that hour, the next day, or even the next week, you will begin to see it all with new, creative and delighted eyes.  Besides, whoever said you have to start what you finish within some self-imposed time frame?

You are absolutely right, Mark! Get up and walk away for a while. Works for me.

Unfortunately, for those growing up, the State of Indiana will no longer be teaching penmanship. They will be teaching keyboarding (the old typing classes, but on computers). All part of saving $$$$ and using the time to teach more of the material on the standardized tests that determine the teachers’ raises….
