If you take a moment to think about it, life is a giant roulette wheel. Every moment of every day we have to make choices, and each choice we make is like a shot in the dark. Whether we load a brush with oil paint and begin to apply it a blank canvas, or if we’re crossing the street, there is risk involved. Whatever action you take, creative or not, the ball is dropped into the cosmic roulette wheel and it is a toss up how those choices will play out.
Some of the choices we make are simple choices; those are the choices that we are fairly certain what the outcome will be – bill paying, menu ordering, recipe choosing. Other choices are not so easy and clear cut, and we spin the wheel and hope for the best.
As in your day-to-day life, every time you pick up a tool to create your art you take a risk and drop another marble into the roulette wheel. How much of yourself will you put into your creative vision and process? How far and deep will you will you allow your work to reveal your soul? What are your muses telling you to do and are you listening? How are you inspired and are you aggressively pursuing that inspiration?
As a creative person, you must be willing to risk getting in touch with, and feeling comfortable with, your creative impulses and then going for broke with the creative energy and inspiration that you’ve been given. What is the point of looking back one day, perhaps with sadness and regret with “I should have.” “I could have.” “I had the opportunity but I didn’t take it.” “I knew what I needed to do but was too frightened at the time.” “I had the idea but I sat on it.”
If you have a choice between doing something expected and safe with your art and really spinning the creative roulette wheel, going for broke by paying attention to your creative impulses and then acting on them, choose the later. Don’t leave this world with regrets, wasted inspiration, and predictable, lifeless art as your legacy.
