Alison from Florida called into Creative Mojo with Mark Lipinski to share her family traditions and rituals! Here’s what she told us:
I am the oldest of 6 children. Each year on Thanksgiving night, we would put all of our names on a piece of paper and pull them out of a hat. We would be responsible for giving that sibling a gift on our family children holiday,
Christmas Eve Eve. My Mom started this as a way to keep us entertained and “subdued” (I use that term loosely!), until Christmas Eve when a pillowcase full of packages would mysteriously appear on the doorstep while we were at Mass OR when Santa would arrive! That way, we had something else to entertain us for the evening so Mom could finish up her preparations for the whirlwind day that lay ahead. Even though I am 52 years old, we still call each other and send messages on Christmas Eve Eve!
The other family tradition is quite amusing. As I earlier said, I am the oldest of 6 children. All of our names begin with the letter “A”. Many families do this BUT…
When us kids were young we agreed to continue the alphabet. So, my children are “B”s, the next sibling has her children named with “C”s and so on… My brother’s kept their sons with the name beginning with “A” because they will inherit the family business which is “A. Prata Complete Landscaping”.
My oldest daughter has continued this tradition with my first grandchild named Hadley.
I was very happy with this “rule” as when my son was born, his father wanted to name him WALTER! Luckily there was the “B” rule!
I am very fond of our family traditions as well as many others are of theirs. That is a great thing about families.
Alison’s name was randomly chosen from all of the day’s callers by author, and show co-host, Meg Cox.
Alison won Meg’s new book, The Book of New Family Traditions (and Meg autographed it to Alison before she left Pickle Road)
Congrats, Alison! xoxom
