MEET TODAY’S GUESTS

Lecturer, Teacher, Quilt Designer, Author

TRICIA LYNN MALONEY

MaloneyTricia_2

About Tricia …

“I began my first quilt in 1996 after graduating from college with a degree in History.  Although I probably made every mistake known to exist to quilters in that first project, I persevered and completed the quilt, which is fondly called “Big Ugly.”  In addition to actually completing the quilt, I became hooked on quilting and couldn’t wait to make my next quilt…and my next.  I am mostly a self-taught quilter who isn’t afraid to try new things.  I have worked in a quilt shop, learned to do free motion quilting,  taught quilting classes, and designed my own quilts.  Later I returned to college and earned a Master’s degree in Education and taught early childhood education for many years before becoming a librarian in my hometown library.
The year 2006 changed my life when I purchased a large collection of antique and vintage quilt blocks, fabric, and tops dating from the 1860’s to the 1960’s.  I was inspired to do something no one else had ever done before — I MADE A QUILT!  That first “orphan quilt” consisted of four 1930’s four patch blocks paired with new reproduction fabrics. In 2010, my first book, ORPHAN BLOCK QUILTS:  MAKING A HOME FOR ANTIQUE, VINTAGE, COLLECTIBLE, AND LEFTOVER QUILT BLOCKS was published.
That first book led to being featured in numerous quilt magazines and books as well as a new quilt book, A RUSSIAN JOURNEY IN QUILTS:  THE STORY OF NICHOLAS AND NINA FILATOFF.”
On today’s Creative Mojo with Mark Lipinski, I get a chance to talk with, Tricia Lynn Maloney, about her new book, A Russian Journey: The Story of Nicholas and Nina Filatoff.
my_book_two
This is a very interesting story of Nicholas and Nina Filatoff, who were servants to one of Meadville, Pennsylvania’s most prominent families who took over the Picard Farm from the previous owners.  Tricia’s grandmother, Midge Picard, remembered when the Filatoff’s hired her father, Arthur, to run their farm.   Midge’s father once owned the farm and gave it up in the economically disastrous  1930’s.

Here is a sampling of just some of the quilt projects from Tricia’s book:

Meet

Artist, Author, Professor

TIMOTHY CALLAGHAN

TimothyCallaghan

About Timothy…

Timothy Callaghan is a painter who lives and works in Cleveland, Ohio. His paintings depict a modern American Mid-west landscape. His work is about space, the physical space of his immediate environment and the flat space that defines twentieth-century painting. Because the practice of painting predominantly concerns itself with the sensation of looking, he approaches the work with this in mind. He locates himself within the traditions of genre painting, such as landscape or still life, seeking to sustain this principle of painting that relies upon optical elements and that reinforce significance and joy.

On today’s Creative Mojo with Mark Lipinski, I’m very excited to talk with Timothy Callaghan about his new book, One Painting a Day: A 6-Week Course in Observational Painting: Creating Extraordinary Paintings from Everyday Experiences.

519tEm7B8jL

One Painting A Day offers you an inspiring six-week course exploring the timeless traditions of observational painting through daily experience and routine.

This motivational guide is broken up into three parts to focus on the three major traditions of observational painting: still life, landscape, and portraiture. Each of the 42 daily exercises launches a small, immediate, and responsive painting based on a theme drawn from your daily experience. You will find suggestions on technique, approach, and materials for each day, while the “weekly lessons” explore a format or a rhythm for creating content, inspiring you to make the ordinary extraordinary as you create from every day experience. This beautiful collection of contemporary paintings serves as a workbook of ideas for aspiring artists, art students, professional designers, and art lovers alike.

I wanted to share with you just a very, very small sampling of Timothy Callaghan’s artwork:
