Herbs on the go. Dig up your rosemary, basil, tarragon, oregano, marjoram, thyme, parsley and chives to grow them inside as house plants. Keep them in a cool, sunny spot, and allow the soil to dry out before watering. Snip off the leaves as needed in the kitchen, but do not strip them completely. For herbs that have grown vigorously through the summer, cut them back about halfway and then dry or freeze the extra harvest or share it with friends. Herb crafts such as lavender soap and sachets are great as gifts.

I am not such a great knitter but I am an exceptional yarn buyer. I’ll have to dig through my stash for the perfect colors. Whip up a few of these as stocking stuffers. Here’s the pattern:

This flower-holding Mummy is the cutest flower vase I have seen a long time and perfect for Halloween (or for someone who has just had a facelift). Grab yourself a Dollar Store vase, a little gauze, craft store goggly eyes, and a small amount of water down white glue or Mod Podge. You can literally make dozens of these in minutes. Here’s how:

This is a hand-powered portable espresso machine that needs no compressed air or other fancy gadgetry to get the job done. Just scoop up the coffee, tamp it down, pour 2.4 ounces of hot water into the chamber, then start pumping to pre-infuse and build up the pressure. Keep pumping to extract the coffee and you’re left with a robust 1.7 ounce espresso to savor at your cubicle, on the plane, or in a fancy hot air balloon. PS I love those shoes you feature, not to wear but as works of art.

OK, went back because there were so many things to consider at first read and I GOTTA comment on the sweet potato biscuit recipe. I can now consider myself an expert because we grow sweet potatoes on the family farm and here’s the mantra that I’m telling everyone when they buy a box: “low and slow.” That’s the way to cook sweet potatoes before you turn them into biscuits (or anything else). Oven temp at 250 degrees and cook them for 2-3 hours. We start them at dinner and turn off the oven at bedtime then let them stay in the oven overnight. Simple as pie…if you wanted to turn them into pie, I guess. “Low and slow”…everyone repeat after me.
