Designing for Crewel

I had an idea for a concept.  My idea was to merge Jacobean design (1600’s) with Mid-Century Modern (1950’s)

First Draft – Drawing shapes inspired by the 1950’s and Jacobean-inspired shapes and flowers from the 1600’s

Copying, Cutting, and Pasting

Merging the 2, thinking it was finished, then, 24-hours later “Hated It!”

Back to the drawing board, enlarging and making my focal point more ‘focal’

Moving and adding elements

Add the background and more shapes to balance out the design

The difference

Spraying the design so it will stick to the Twill Fabric (purchased at Joann) so I can draw trace my design onto the fabric (using a light box)

Now it’s “2-Snaps Up with a Needle!”

The Color Palette (at least for now)

All but one of these are Paternayan brand, 100% Virgin Wool Yarn. $1.50 each.  There are a gazillion shades and the subtlety between them is almost alarming!

The 5th dark blue/green from the top is an Appletons brand wool.  It’s a very very popular brand, but seems a bit thinner than the Paternayan, which isn’t bad, and necessary for some crewel and needlework.

I bought my wool at The Edwardian Needle in Fairfield, New Jersey. . .   http://www.theedwardianneedle.com

505 Spray and Fix Temporary Fabric Adhesive

Spray and fix fabric adhesive 505 is a temporary fabric adhesive designed for quilt basting, applique, sewing, embroidery and crafts. Eliminates pinning and allows repeated repositioning. Odorless colorless and acid-free.

Ask your local quilt shop to order it for you!  It’s the very best temporary adhesive for fabric and paper, in my humble opinion (and it’s not as inexpensive as some others, but worth it).

Hi Mark and Mr. Electric. I tried for 20 minutes and could not get the link. I missed your lovely voices but will re=read the blog a couple more times. Hopefully, next week will work. I’m in California and read where others did not get the link…… Take care.

I just love your posts. Only one problem…you ALWAYS find one more way for me to spend money. Retirement has caused me to make lists of my wishes. You have made that s long list. However, you have also provided many dreams to keep me going! That’s for the color you put in my life!

Hi Mark, I’m one who could not find your live show yesterday. Weird! I was wondering about the log cabin book from a few weeks ago. Not sure if you mailed it yet, but if so I have not received it. Thanks, and thanks for all your good info and fun!

I usually don’t catch you live so enjoy catching you on You Tube. Really like your steps used in designing and the way you share a book..even if the words are backwards.

Finally getting to watch your Saturday broadcast. I love your crewel design and the colors you chose. I embroidered for years. I used to do custom orders for people. Monograms, favorite flowers. I never really gave it any thought,I just did it. I never sat with empty hands or spent time on the computer, I need to find that zen again. Love watching you and Mr. E. !

Loved the 13 questions. I think more people need to take a moment for introspection. I did crewel work as a teenager and you have sparked an interest in a possible project in my future.
