Designing for Crewel

I had an idea for a concept.  My idea was to merge Jacobean design (1600’s) with Mid-Century Modern (1950’s)

First Draft – Drawing shapes inspired by the 1950’s and Jacobean-inspired shapes and flowers from the 1600’s

Copying, Cutting, and Pasting 

Merging the 2, thinking it was finished, then, 24-hours later “Hated It!”

 

Back to the drawing board, enlarging and making my focal point more ‘focal’

Moving and adding elements 

Add the background and more shapes to balance out the design

Going over my lines with a Sharpie

The difference

Spraying the design so it will stick to the Twill Fabric (purchased at Joann) so I can draw trace my design onto the fabric (using a light box)

Now it’s “2-Snaps Up with a Needle!”

The Color Palette (at least for now)

All but one of these are Paternayan brand, 100% Virgin Wool Yarn. $1.50 each.  There are a gazillion shades and the subtlety between them is almost alarming!

The 5th dark blue/green from the top is an Appletons brand wool.  It’s a very very popular brand, but seems a bit thinner than the Paternayan, which isn’t bad, and necessary for some crewel and needlework.
