YOKE DU YOUR

animated-telephone-image-0081.gif

The boss wondered why one of his most valued employees was absent but had not phoned in sick one day.

Needing to have an urgent problem with one of the main computers resolved, he dialed the employee’s home phone number and was greeted with a child’s whisper.

‘ Hello?’

‘Is your daddy home?’ he asked.

Yes ,‘ whispered the small voice.

May I talk with him?’ The child whispered, ‘ No .’

Surprised and wanting to talk with an adult, the boss asked, ‘Is your Mummy there?’ ‘Yes’

‘May I talk with her?’ Again the small voice whispered, ‘ No ‘

Hoping there was somebody with whom he could leave a message, the boss asked, ‘Is anybody else there?’

Yes, ‘ whispered the child, ‘ a policeman.’

Wondering what a cop would be doing at his employee’s home, the boss asked, ‘May I speak with the policeman?’

‘ No, he’s busy, ‘ whispered the child.

‘Busy doing what?’

‘ Talking to Daddy and Mummy and the Fireman, ‘ came the whispered answer.

Growing more worried as he heard a loud noise in the background through the earpiece on the phone, the boss asked, ‘What is that noise?’

‘ A helicopter ‘ answered the whispering voice…

‘What is going on there?’ demanded the boss, now truly apprehensive.

Again, whispering, the child answered, ‘ The search team just landed a helicopter ‘

Alarmed, concerned and a little frustrated the boss asked, ‘What are they searching for?’

Still whispering, the young voice replied with a muffled giggle…

‘ME.’

IDEA I LOVE

Loving this uptown “pumpkin” pincushion. Looking for a kidney… can you help?

I have been diagnosed with Stage 4/5 chronic kidney disease. Stage 5 means that my kidney has failed. People can become very sick and, of course, no kidney function, no polkas, not patchwork, no living (which makes the first two examples redundant, I guess LOL).

My doctors have told me that the ideal treatment for kidney failure is another kidney transplant. A kidney transplant come from a deceased donor (someone who has died), but I would have to wait about 5 to 7 years, or even longer, for this kind of transplant. This would mean I would probably have to spend years on dialysis, where machines would clean my blood for me and wear down other parts of my body. A transplant from a living donor also has the best chance of working for many years. Unfortunately, there are no suitable donors in my immediate family.

During my evaluation at the Transplant Center, I learned that one of the best ways is to help myself was to make sure that those closest to me know about my situation (which is so difficult to do). I learned that in the United States, there are over 100,000 people on the waiting list for a kidney. Each year, only about 11,000 of those patients are fortunate enough to get a kidney transplant from someone who has died and donated their organs. I am hoping I will be able to find a living donor so that I can avoid dialysis and be transplanted soon so that I may live longer and with an improved quality of life (at this point, I’m alive but hardly what one might call ‘living’).

If you would like to learn more about being a living donor, the staff at my Transplant Center is wonderful and available to talk with you confidentially.  The Transplant Center staff at Saint Barnabas Medical Center can talk to you about what is involved in the living donation process and answer any questions.

To reach the St. Barnabas Transplant Team call:

973-322-5346

Calling for any information regarding your donation process is kept strictly confidential, EVEN FROM ME, unless you consent to share this information.

I wholeheartedly appreciate any support that you can offer to me, no matter how big or how small.  If I can get a kidney transplant from a friend, that would be best for my health and my future.  I realize that donating a kidney may not be right for everyone, or it simply might not be right at this time. I also know that donating a kidney is a very personal decision that requires not only education about the risks and benefits but also thoughtful consideration and the support of your loved ones.  I hope that someone out there will be able to help me.

The Promise Girls

My girl, Marie Bostwick, released her newest novel, The Promise Girls, this week!

In an emotionally rich and captivating new novel, New York Times bestselling author Marie Bostwick reunites three sisters whose deep bond is rooted in an unconventional past.

Every child prodigy grows up eventually. For the Promise sisters, escaping their mother’s narcissism and the notoriety that came with her bestselling book hasn’t been easy. Minerva Promise claimed that her three “test tube” daughters—gifted pianist Joanie, artistic Meg, and storyteller Avery—were engineered and molded to be geniuses. In adulthood, their modest lives fall far short of her grand ambitions. But now, twenty years after the book’s release, she hopes to redeem herself by taking part in a new documentary.

Meg, who hasn’t picked up a paintbrush in years, adamantly refuses to participate, until a car accident leaves her with crushing medical bills. While she recuperates in Seattle, the three sisters reluctantly meet with filmmaker Hal Seeger, another former prodigy. Like them, he’s familiar with the weight of failed potential. But as he digs deeper, he uncovers secrets they’ve hidden from each other—and a revelation that will challenge their beliefs, even as it spurs them to forge their own extraordinary lives at last.

I remember my little Italian grandmother roaming the neighborhood in early spring to find the sweetest and most tender dandelions for salads (I still LOVE a young dandelion salad). I remember my miffed Polish father roaming the yard in the early spring trying to dig out the damn dandelions that were ruining his lawn.  Both of these folks could have really used this amazballs dandelion trowel.  Now, the only thing I dig is into a bowl of Rocky Road so I  may have to pass on the tool, but I know that you or somebody you know needs it.  Find it here: https://sneeboerusa.com/product/dandelion-trowel-2/

ON MY PLAYLIST . . .

The Mountain Goats

A few weeks ago I was hanging with Liza Lucy at Meg Cox’s house.  Meg’s son, Max, was listening to a CD, The Mountain Goats, and I loved it.  Thanks to iTunes, I bought one of their albums on the spot.  It’s great music to cook, eat dinner, clean, or to sew/quilt by.  Just rock enough to keep you moving and just mellow enough to calm you down.  Listen to them here:

OK – it took me a while to get to this – but that box of SRA stuff blew me away. I was 17 in 1967 and volunteered at a local elementary school one summer. I was an assistant to a 6th grade teacher with an entire class of students bound for 7th grade.

This was in NYC – in Manhattan. While Chelsea is totally gentrified now, back then it was a slum. My parents – a pair of visionaries – bought a fixer-upper on West 20th Street. The school was right across the street.

The highest reading level in that class was one little fellow – he had a 3rd grade level. We did that SRA stuff with the kids for a large part of the class period. It was just awful. But these kids – the books they were taking out of the library – Curious George.

    Sad memories.
