MEG COX

About MEG…

Meg Cox joins me at Pickle Road Studios to celebrate her AMAZING NEW BOOK (see below): “The Book of New Family Traditions: How to Create Great Rituals for Holidays and Every Day.”

An Ohio native, Meg has been earning her living as a writer since graduating from Northwestern University in 1975. She was hired as a staff writer by the Wall Street Journal in 1977, at age 24, and worked at the WSJ in Chicago and New York for 17 years.

Since the birth of her son, Max, in 1994, Meg has written for many national magazines, lectured and taught all over the country and authored five books.  She continues to contribute weekend arts features to the Wall Street Journal.

Meg says, “My two main specialties are FAMILY TRADITIONS and QUILTING, two wildly misunderstood topics. Both are thought to be old-fashioned and un-hip which could not be farther from the truth. Today’s smart parents are avid inventors of personalized rituals and celebrations that give their kids a sense of identity, security, meaning and fun. These traditions encompass everything from meals and activities handed down through generations, to brand-new rituals, including some built around cutting-edge tech devices like iPads and smart phones. The same is true of quilting: the 21 million American quilters who have built this burgeoning craft into a $3.6 billion industry are educated, computer-literate and fiercely creative.”

Meg Cox’s writing and lecturing on FAMILY TRADITIONS is informed by her experience as a mother, stepmother and step-grandmother, as well as more than a decade of interviewing psychologists, religious leaders and hundreds of families about rituals. Meg has been hired as a traditions spokesperson by such companies as Pillsbury, KFC and Hallmark.

Let’s bring our families together for memorable moments that nourish and inspire!

JENNIFER GRANT

About JENNIFER…

Jennifer Grant is the author of two books. Her first, Love You More: The Divine Surprise of Adopting My Daughter (August 2011), is the story of adopting her youngest child from Guatemala. Her second book, also a memoir about family, is titled MOMumental: Adventures in the Messy Art of Raising a Family (May 2012, pictured below). MOMumental has recently been featured in Publishers Weekly and The Christian Science MonitorGrant has written columns, feature stories and restaurant profiles for papers in the Sun-Times Newsgroup and for the Chicago Tribune. She is a member of the National Society of Newspaper Columnists and a proud founding member of Redbud Writers Guild. She lives with her husband and four children outside of Chicago, Illinois.

Jennifer says,MOMumental: Adventures in the Messy Art of Raising a Family is about my own missteps and small victories as a mother. Over the years, after beginning my parenting journey – as so many of us do – staggering under the weight of the expectations I had for myself, I’ve loosened up. I’ve come to learn that none of us is perfect. We all fail, misunderstand our kids sometimes, and mess up in countless ways. In MOMumental, I share stories of some of my ‘epic fails’ as a mom.

The dire messages that flash on the computer or television screen that warn what a mother absolutely must or must not do no longer hold me tightly in their grasp. I now look at myself – and at other mothers – with less judgment, knowing that we all work it out, there is no manual for motherhood, and that the most important thing in raising kids is to be authentically connected with them….

I hope in sharing my own personal – and often quite cringe-worthy – story in MOMumental, other parents will show themselves, and other parents, more grace as we raise our children.”

EDITH WAGNER

About EDITH…

Edith Wagner is the editor of Reunions magazine, author of Reunions Workbook and Catalog and The Family Reunion Sourcebook (Lowell House, Los Angeles). She collects material for her column at genealogy.com and Reunions magazine from family reunions, and invites readers to share their reunion ideas, concerns or questions.

Inc. magazine recently profiled Edith in an article entitled “11 Businesses You Can Start in Your Pajamas”: “Edith Wagner has worn many hats: she’s been a social worker, a juvenile officer, and worked in PR before starting her own business, Reunions, a trade publication for reunion planners with a circulation of about 15,000. Based out of her home in Milwaukee with one (near) full-time employee and several part-time contractors, Wagner says the entrepreneurial bug struck later in life than most. ‘I left [PR] when I was 40 feeling that was when life was beginning,’ she says. ‘I am not one of those who burned out, I just needed to do more creative work.'”

Therapist, Author, Philosopher, Mom, Teacher

JULIE TALLARD JOHNSON

About JULIE…

Julie Tallard Johnson, MSW, LCSW is a licensed psychotherapist who maintains a private counseling and consultation service, Healing Services On the River, established in Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin, in 1995. Here she offers the year-long Initiation Course based on her book, Wheel of Initiation, her popular spiritual journaling classes, Bindu Breathwork, writing consultations and one-on-one transpersonal counseling.

Her studies and investigation into cognitive-behavioral therapy, mind training, thought transformation, Buddhist philosophy, transpersonal counseling, and group dynamics led to her development of the Wheel of Initiation and a year-long Initiation course, which she has facilitated since 1995. She employs a multicultural approach in her work, knowing that each person has to find a spiritual practice that is personally relevant for them. In 2008 the land adjacent to her practice was opened up so that others could enjoy its one-acre prairie spiral-labyrinth and 40 acres of nature paths as a place for meditations and writing retreats.

Julie obtained her undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin at Madison where she had a double major in sociology and social work. In 1982 she began her career as a social worker and case manager of a program in Minneapolis for those with chronic and persistent mental illness. She soon became supervisor of a new program where she designed and coordinated “friendship circles” for the adult mentally ill.

While in graduate school at the University of Minnesota at Duluth, she researched self-help and support groups and could not find one that was set up for siblings and adult children of the mentally ill. As a result, she designed and authored The Eight Stage Healing Process for Families and Friends of the Mentally Ill. This book was published by Doubleday in 1989 and Julie toured the United States, Canada, and Australia teaching the eight stages and offering instructions on how to set up a healthy self-help group. She founded the National Siblings Network in the United States through the Alliance of the Mentally Ill, and Australia adopted her eight-stage protocol, incorporating it into their primary national program for families of the mentally ill.

In all, Julie has authored nine books, two for adults and seven for youth. Julie has also self-published a manual for group facilitators of the Eight Stage Healing Process. She has received many positive reviews and awards for her books including three Roundtable awards, Best Youth book from New York Library, and the Independent Book award for best multicultural book for youth for The Thundering Years: Rituals and Sacred Wisdom for Teens (His Holiness the Dalai Lama wrote a piece for this book). Her Teen Psychic: Developing Your Intuitive and Spiritual Powers book received a Star Review in Publisher’s Weekly and remains one of her most popular books with young readers.

Julie has a bimonthly newsletter: Monday Musings for Writers & Spiritual Pilgrims that she updates regularly, offering readers a means for spiritual inquiry through journaling and meditation. Her website features a monthly article, her Living The Initiated Life Blog & other inspirational material. She also writes columns on transpersonal psychology & spirituality for two local papers. Julie is a teacher of Vipassana (mindfulness) meditation, which she has also practiced for three decades. Her personal meditation practice began at the age of 16 where she was initiated with a mantra. She took instruction in Rebirthing Breathwork as well as Shamnic Breathwork, Holotrophic and Bindu Breathwork™. Along with this she studied and applied mandala work and the healing power of circles, wheels, and mandalas in the transformative process.

She lives with her husband, Bill, and daughter, Lydia, outside of Spring Green, Wisconsin. They share their 40 acres with two horses, several laying chickens & two dogs.

We’ll be talking with Julie about her newest book!
