ALLIE ALLER
VALERIE BOTHELL
About Allie and Valerie…
Allison Aller has been stitching, sewing, knitting, and writing since she was a child….and that child is alive and well in the joyful work she creates today in the field of crazy quilting.
After earning her degree in Design and Environmental Analysis from Cornell University in 1977, Allie has been quilting non-stop. She made bed quilts, Broderie Perse, stained glass quilts, and landscape quilts for two and an half decades and these approaches still inform her creativity…for the past twelve years, the sumptuous and liberating genre of crazy quilting has been her focus. She is currently fascinated by the confluence of vintage traditional quilting and crazy quilting.
Her work has appeared in Quilters Newsletter Magazine, American Quilter, the $100,000 Quilt Challenge, Needlepoint Now, and the Way to Womens Wellness Art Bra Calendars (cover, 2007), as “guest artist” in several books, and in her own “Allie Aller’s Crazy Quilting, C & T Publishing, 2011. Her second book, co-authored with fellow crazy quilter Valerie Bothell, is due out in May 2014.
She is an instructor for http://www.Craftsy.com and teaches “Crazy Quilting” online for them.
Her awards include:
First Place, Crazy Quilts, American Quilters’ Society Show in Nashville, TN 2003
Second Place, Embellished Quilts, International Quilt Association Show in Houston, TX 2008
First Place, Alliance for American Quilts’ My Quilts/Our History contest, 2008
Second Place, Embellished Quilts, International Quilt Association Show in Houston, TX 2010
First Place, The Great Pink Bandana Challenge, Simplicity Creative Group, 2011
Grand Prize, DMC Memories Contest, 2013
Her first commercially produced pattern, “Pretty Crazy”, offers an introduction to crazy quilting for those who want to work by machine, not by hand. It is offered by Brookshier Design Studio.
Her publisher, C & T, has also come out with a deck of playing cards featuring details from some of her quilts, and included her work in their “Quilted Masterpieces” Datekeeper.
Allie has been blogging steadily since 2005 and invites you to come visit her blog, AlliesInStitches, where she posts works-in-progress photos, tutorials, and links to other fine stitchers’ works. Note especially the rich archive of subjects in the keywords on the right side of her blog. She serves on the board of the Quilt Alliance (formerly the Alliance for American Quilts) a non profit organization dedicated to documenting, preserving, and sharing the work and stories of quilters around the world..
She enjoys teaching crazy piecing and embellishment, and loves meeting other stitchers all over the country at both national conferences and local guilds. Her workshops, lectures, and teaching schedule can all be found in separate pages on her blog.
Her other passion is gardening, which she shares with her husband, Robert, in their country home outside of Portland, Oregon. They have two wonderful grown sons, and a fabulous soon-to-be daughter-in-law!
Valerie Bothell Has been happily teaching crazy quilting from her home in Wichita, Kansas, for the last 17 years. She has hosted the Victorian Stitchery Retreat for the past seven years in her hometown. Traveling and teaching is very rewarding to her, and she always looks forward to every opportunity to share her love of crazy quilting. She has been married 20 years and has four very handsome sons.
Allie and Valerie’s book, Quilting – Just a Little Bit Crazy a Marriage of Traditional & Crazy Quilting
Cross traditional crazy quilting with favorite pieced quilt patterns and today’s machine quilting methods, and what do you get? Crazy fun for all kinds of quilters, even those who don’t like handwork. Allie Aller and Valerie Bothell’s guide offers an exuberant mixture of vintage and modern, hand and machine work, and clever ways to make traditional quilts a little crazy. Includes 10 projects in sizes from small wall hangings to bed quilts; photo instructions for 15 crazy quilt and silk ribbon embroidery stitches; and tips for combining crazy quilting with machine piecing and embroidery.

BERNADETTE KENT
About Bernadette…
Bernadette can’t began quilting when a friend of hers dropped by with a small project designed to keep Bernadette busy while she was home with her second child. At that time, Bernadette did not know what I quilt was!
Her three children, Ashley Nicole, Colton Elliot, and Taylor Graeme, kept her busy shuffling them to gym meets, piano lessons, soccer games, and every other event they could dream up. While she waited for each child, she stitched. As you stitch, her love of quilting grew. The more she sewed, the better she became.
In 1999 she opened a small quilt shop, Traditional Pastimes, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. She has been designing quilts, bags and miniatures since 2001.
Bernadette’s book, Rubies, Diamonds and Garnets, Too (click on the link to order your copy)
A Sparkling Block-of-the-Month Quilt. The breathtaking sparkle of diamonds and the deep, dramatic reds of rubies and garnets have bewitched us for centuries. They conjure visions of luxury, wealth and beauty. Through time, we’ve used them as tokens of our love and esteem for those we cherish. Translate those same jewel tones into fabric and you have the makings for an electrifying quilt that, much like a perfect gem, will be handed down for generations. The quilt was used as The Kansas City Star’s Block-of-the-Month program and highlights 13 block designs. A second version uses the same patterns but gives you the opportunity to make a much larger quilt by adding two more large blocks and 12 smaller blocks.
Here is a sampling of the Block-of-the-Month quilts from Bernadette’s book:
